GBN invest £3 million in new sorting equipment
GBN’s investment of £3 million in new sorting equipment and a Dicom baler – the first of its kind in the UK – at the Basildon site means that 75 000 tonnes of RDF can be processed each year.
Materials that are delivered into our Basildon site from the collection fleet and other sorting facilities pass through a shredder, conveyor, magnets and picking station to sort out the larger more accessible recyclables.
A secondary sorting process then takes what hasn’t been separated and passes this through another shredder and a secondary mechanical sorting process to extract any further items.
The residue that is left is baled and wrapped and sent to Europe as refuse derived fuel, enabling us to extend the zero waste to landfill solutions that we offer to construction, commercial and household customers, and take control of the full recycling and recovery process.
This major investment is a culmination of our programme of expansion over the last 10 years across the South East.
“This is a great step forward for GBN in our efforts to continually innovate and help our clients divert as much material as possible from landfill. We have selected the best combination and configuration of sorting technology that will help us achieve the maximum recycling rates and ensure the production of good quality RDF.” states Tony Dickens, Director GBN Services.
“We are delighted that GBN have invested further in this area. In line with our own environmental commitments and that of our clients, we seek to divert waste from landfill and with this new facility we are confident that the maximum amount of waste collected by GBN is recycled in the first instance and then sent away as a fuel to generate energy.” comments Mark Prior, Head of Operations at Leaner Logistics.
